Cover Twins: Wolf Tales 12 vs. In The Heat of the Bite

Lately it seems like I’ve been coming across more and more covers that are either using the same stock photo OR the composition is so very close, but not necessarily the same photo. So I thought it would be a fun feature to compare them and get some discussion going on which one we prefer. Kind of like a little cover war tournament.

I know this is not an original feature by any means as I’ve seen a few other features out there like it, but I still think it’d be fun. So here goes!

For this first round of Cover Twins, we have Wolf Tales 12 by Kate Douglas and In The Heat of the Bite by Lydia Dare:

Wolf Tales 12 by Kate Douglas In the Heat of the Bite by Lydia Dare

First off, the craziest thing is that both of these released on the same exact day as well! They’re total twins, it’s Twilight Zone eerie. “Doobie-doobie-doobie”. lol

So this is definitely a case of the same stock photo use. Although, I gotta hand it to one of them because there was definitely some good Photoshop work done on one or the other because a few things are quite different in both. Her hair for one is a bit lighter on the In the Heat of the Bite cover as well as wavy instead of straight. In addition, she’s wearing a light shirt instead of dark and her fingernails aren’t painted. Not sure which one did the photo editing there, but they did a great job because they both look natural.

As far as which cover I prefer, I definitely love the pinks in the Wolf Tales 12 cover better because I love my pink! I think the combination of her dark hair and outfit to the hot pink sky and text is really sexy.

But, I think the clear winner (for me) is In the Heat of the Bite. I’m actually guessing that they did most of the photo editing on the girl because the cover is a lot more dynamic and seems to have had more thought put into it. I love the coloring, the composition, and the typography (with the combination of a serif and script font). So in my book that’s the clear winner for this round.

Which book cover do you like better?

I like the second cover best. You are so right that it is the same couple, but there is more to the cover than just them. Love that.

LOL…I'm obviously biased, but I do love my Wolf Tales 12 cover. What makes me so happy with it is the fact that so many of my stories in the series are of characters of mixed race, and the heroine isn't your typical blue-eyed blonde who so often appears on book covers. She has a mysterious look that fits my characters.Lydia and I actually talked about doing some cross promotion when we realized the books were releasing the same day, but both of us were just too busy to carry it off.

I love your idea of comparing covers–it's fun to see what's out there. For the most part, I've loved my Wolf Tales covers…though there is the one with "teenagers in love" on Wolf Tales VI where the kids look about fifteen…

I decided on the first one because the woman's dress looks fake in the Lydia Dare title. I also really like being able to see the back of the man's head and the woman's hand in his hair. But the surrounding? Book two is prettier. Plus, I'll always pick up a book with the Houses of Parliament on the cover. I'm a total Anglophile.

Oh good grief! Same image and release date. That is no bueno… But I think I'm liking Wolf Tales 12 more. I love my pink, too and I just think it looks sexier for some reason, which is weird because it's the same pic! LOL

Fun feature Sarah. I hope you continue it.

Ha! This couple is very popular with covers apparently. There's another cover for a Lacey Alexander book that features the same couple.__Check it out on GoodReads
