Hey everyone! We interviewed historical fantasy mystery author, Assaph Mehr! Read on to find more about his books, his writing, and what inspired him!
What are your three favorite books that inspire your writing?
I’ll list a book and two series instead 🙂
Bridge of Birds, by Barry Hughart. “A story of China that never was” – it’s a charming mystery set in a fantastical version of ancient China. A perfect blend of history, mystery, and fantasy.
Lindsey Davis’ Falco mysteries are probably the best known Roman-era detective (though Ruth Downie’s Medicus series is just as awesome!)
Read Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files for some great modern-day urban-fantasy detective stories.
What are you doing when you’re not writing?
Family, work, reading, practicing martial arts!
What is the hardest thing about writing, for you?
I have a pretty good routine by now. I write on the train to & from work. It’s not a lot of time, but you’d be amazed at what you can do with consistent effort. I’m also continually growing and evolving as a writer, learning from past mistakes 😉
What are you excited about right now?
The upcoming release of my next full-length novel! It’s now with my editor, I already had the cover
Which book of yours would you recommend a reader start with?
The first book (Murder In Absentia) sets the tone of the mysteries and the Roman-esque fantasy world. It’s where you get to meet the hero, and explore the world. However, I also publish free short stories on my blog. If you’re keen to just try out my blend of history, mystery and fantasy head to https://egretia.com/short-stories/ for some quick and entertaining reads.
