Trattora is the adopted daughter of the Chieftain on a primitive frontier planet. Velkan, meanwhile, is an indentured serf who has never known what it feels like to be free. The two find themselves fleeing a terrifying invasion by the Galactic Pirates, thrown together on a ramshackle mining vessel that is heavy with dark secrets. When the pair’s matching birth bracelets lead them to a shocking discovery about their true lineage, stakes begin rising, and both Trattora and Velkan are plunged headfirst into an adventure. Because they are products of the Expulsion Project, in which their birth families sacrificed their own lives to save Trattora’s and Velkan’s. Now the two race to save their families from liquidation, as they struggle to take down a genocidal self-actualizing software that has now taken over large swathes of their home planet.
